Chris - on organizing files
Excuse me Chris but I`m running out the door as I
write this. . . my response follows a quick read
of your post.

I`m hard core so I see what you`re doing as a
"clever hack" circumvention of XML (by assigning
symantic meaning - sequence of chapters - in
filenames out side your tagging scheme).

The issue is really one of inventory and process
. . . and is answered by. . . "inventory your source
and and devise a method for creating/conveying
processing instructions."

In one system I designed, authors work with an
meta document called an "inventory" file which
advises process how to handle their files and
file content. Everything is registered in a database
with "invisible, machine generated" file names
like "d0013014" (guarenteed to be unique) and,
content is accessed through indirection based on
registered inventory entries and a common XML schema.

It has the added benefit in that new documents can
be "rough composed" from existing content by running
a sequenced list of desired contents against the
database.

When I say "database," it can be as simple as a flat
file, in CSV or even XML, with scripting support.

Sorry to be so brief. Got to run.
