Content Management for ArborText or XMetaL?
Hi, all.

I am currently trying to plan for converting a documentation set
from RoboHelp X5 to XML. I am thinking of using ArborText or XMetal
as the XML editor (with support for DITA since this seems to provide
the most freedom). I am just starting to learn about all of these
things. We are more interested in using the XML to reuse text and
personalize it (pre-deployment, in other words, the writers are
always producing the output, it`s not something a user would
customize themselves).

A major question I have is what size content management system do I
really need to support the xml? I know that ArborText and XMetaL
integrate with Documentum and Oracle, but we only have three writers
that need to access the information. We have about 14 help system,
not 1000s of documents. We don`t need some huge company-wide content
management system. I need something small-scale and cheap (if not
free).

Does anyone know if ArborText and XMetaL do any content management
on their own or what other alternatives there are? We currenly use
StarTeam for checking in our RoboHelp files.

Also, has anyone had success porting RoboHelp to ArborText or
XMetal? I doubt that RoboHelp`s xml output option will be of much
help.

Thanks in advance for any information!

XMetaL is currently offering a webinar regarding DITA management and
the relationship between FrameMaker and XMetaL to produce DITA docs. I
believe they include a content management piece as well. I have not
had a chance to see it myself yet, but we are moving to the S1000D
standard and we use FrameMaker, so I thought I would try to catch one
when time permits, just for my own edification.

I can personally say that XMetaL is much easier to learn and use than
Epic, and was a lot cheaper before version 4.5. That`s because now, in
order to use the most current XMetaL (version 4.5) to its full
capability, you must install Visual Studio .NET, and that is pretty
expensive. I still use XmetaL 3.1 because of this.

I do know that Arbortext has its own content management piece but I
don`t know about XMetaL. I lot depends on your budget too.

Perhaps you`d like to consider SiberSafe, from SiberLogic, as your CMS... We
have integrations with all the major XML authoring tools (including XMetaL,
Epic, and FrameMaker 7.2), we support DITA, and our minimum license size is
only 5 users (no server license required). Our solution is not free (apart
from the eval version), and it sounds so tacky to call it cheap! But it`s
definitely cost-effective. More info at
http://www.siberlogic.com/sibersafe/ when you have a moment.

Best,
Sandi

It also works with Microsoft Visual Basic .NET, which I picked up a year
ago for $99 on Amazon. Of course, it`s not available there now... did they
discontinue it? Maybe you could pick it up on eBay or something.

Btw., you can actually do quite a bit of xmetal customization w/o xmetal
developer:

y.html

My understanding is that one of their goals with the "dita edition" was
to have a version that didn`t require much/any customization to be
usable. Now they just need a "DocBook edition" too :-)

You may also wish to try to install it to run with the *free* Mono:

http://www.mono-project.com/Main_Page

Mono is an open source project now owned by Novell that is designed to
run .Net applications on many operating systems, including Windows. I
do not know if this has been tried, but it seems to work well for the
things I have attempted myself.

Content Management for ArborText or XMetaL?
I responded to this thread a few days ago, but somehow my response was
never posted.

Microsoft has discontinued Visual Basic .Net. They`ve introduced a
new product called Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition, which
unfortunately does not support plugins like XMetaL Developer.

The original post is a little misleading in suggesting that every
XMetaL user needs Visual Studio. Only XMetaL Developer users need
Visual Studio. XMetaL Developer is the product used by programmers to
build XMetaL customizations. Typically, a writing team will license
multiple copies of XMetaL Author or XMAX, for the writers, and only a
couple of copies of Developer, for the programmers. Also, Developer
includes a license for Author and for XMAX, so users that use
Developer (+ Visual Studio) don`t need to also license the authoring
products.

As David Cramer points out, for XMetaL Author DITA Edition it`s
usually not necessary to build any customizations, so Developer is not
required.

Regards,

Jerry

That part is my fault. I have the group perms set such that
messages from any new member automatically go into the moderation
queue, and I missed your message.

You might want to look into a hosted CMS system. I would highly
suggest DocZone.com. They provide a full on demand solution for
authorning, managing, reuse, localizing, and publishing to any
output or language. The solution can be up and running within 30
days.
