FW: [[i18n-prog] 28th Unicode Conference - September 7-9, 20
Just forwarding the following announcement from another list. I
see that there is specific mention of "XML advances: XSLT, XPath,
XQuery" in the program highlights, and also of a project of the
Unicode Consortium, called the Common Locale Data Repository
(CLDR)[1], that provides locale data (for 96 languages and 130
territories) marked up in an XML vocabulary called the Locale Data
Markup Language (LDML)
[1] http://www.unicode.org/cldr/
[2] http://www.unicode.org/reports/tr35/
The CLDR locale data includes data on localized dates and times
and on collation/sorting, among other things. It could be very
useful to you if you need, for example, to build localization/
internationalization support into a set of XSLT stylesheets -- in
particular, if you want to be able to general locale-aware data
and time strings, and to provide support for locale-aware index
sorting (or other types of sorting).
If anyone from the list ends up attending this conference, it
would be great if you could report back here on any XML or
CLDR-related sessions you attend.

THE UNICODE CONSORTIUM
The Unicode Consortium was founded as a non-profit organization in 1991.
It is dedicated to the development, maintenance and promotion of The
Unicode Standard, a worldwide character encoding. The Unicode Standard
encodes the characters of the world`s principal scripts and languages,
and is code-for-code identical to the international standard ISO/IEC
10646. In addition to cooperating with ISO on the future development of
ISO/IEC 10646, the Consortium is responsible for providing character
properties and algorithms for use in implementations. Today the
membership base of the Unicode Consortium includes major computer
corporations, software producers, database vendors, research
institutions, international agencies and various user groups.
For further information on the Unicode Standard, visit the Unicode Web
site at http://www.unicode.org
