Mac OS X editor for creating .xml files?
I want to create files with the extension .xml on my iMac (OS X 10.3.9).
Neither of my editors will let me save a file with that extension.
(These editors are MS Word 10.1.0 and TextEdit 1.3.)
Can anyone recommend an editor that will run on my operating system that will
let me
save a file as .xml?
(Just a simple editor, not a fancy one designed especially for XML.
I might get one of those later, but for now I want a simple, inexpensive one.)
Thanks.

Someone already recommended BBedit (barebones.com). They used
to have a free "Lite" version that I used back in the pre-X days,
but I didn`t see anything about it on their web site now. A lot
of people think BBedit is worth the $99 though.
On a tighter budget, there`s jEdit (jedit.sf.net) -- it`s written
in Java, but my 350MHz G3 can handle it; if you have a newer
iMac, it won`t be a problem. The price is right (Free) and it has
an XML plugin that makes working with XML a little more pleasant.
Personally, I use Vim (vim.org). I can`t remember if Panther uses
Vim in place of the original vi or not (vi was created at Berkeley,
so if you have a sense of history you might want to bite the
bullet and learn it :-) but one or the other is already installed
on your iMac and waiting for you to open a Terminal. Pico is also
pre-installed and a little easier to use (it puts menus at the
bottom of the screen).

Thanks! I downloaded the free 30-day BBEdit demo, and it does indeed let me
save files
with the extension .xml. I`ve had it only a few hours, but already I`ve found
some features
that make me think I might buy it.

I think BBedit is pushing $200 nowadays. $179 if I recall.
The new `Lite` version Barebones offers is TextWrangler, which is free, and very
nice.

I thought I saw $99 on their web site... <doublecheck/> Ah,
they`re having a sale through the end of the month.

It *does* look nice at that.
