Opening XML files in framemaker
Hi,
I`m able to open XML files in FrameMaker 7.0 (structured) but
FrameMaker automatically suffixes the file with a .fm extension. I
would like to avoid saving the FrameMaker file again into an XML
file.
To make it a little more clear, I do not want to open an XML file in
FrameMaker in the text format. When I open the XML in Frame, it
should display the FrameMaker template formats but should still
continue to be an XML file.
The XML file that I`m trying to open is attached to an EDD. And if
opened in FrameMaker should display all the right formats from the
Framemaker template and should continue to be an XML file. Wanted to
know if we can do this in FrameMaker 7.0 (structured). Is it just a
version problem? When the same XML file is opened in FrameMaker 7.1,
it does not convert the file to an FM file. We are exploring the
option of working both with FM 7 and 7.1 versions because of limited
licences. If I could get a solution to this problem, I could continue
to work with FM 7.
I hope my problem is clear. It will be great if FrameMaker and XML
gurus could throw some light on this problem, while I continue to
google and wade through Frame help!!
Thanks and regards,

Manjusha:
It`s a version problem: 7.1 will open and save direct to XML, 7.0 won`t.
The structureapps.fm file has some new directive elements to allow SFM 7.1
to open and save direct to *.xml, roundtripping text insets, conditions,
cross-references and variables. These elements are ExternalXref and
ConditionalText
You COULD open *.xml in FM 7.0 and Save As to *.xml each time; I`m not sure
about roundtripping conditions -- I think they are lost on saving to *.xml.
Possibly same for text insets, xrefs and variables.
Also, you might consider obtaining the free Sourcerer plug-in, which
implements conditions as attributes, and has a boolean model of condition
visibility which allows both ORing conditions (FrameMaker`s native method)
and ANDing conditions. You can also round-trip these conditions since they
are just attribute values given special meaning by the Sourcerer plug-in.
