"Interchange XML"
Thinking further about the WebWorks Pro move to using an XML/XSLT
output backend makes me hope we`ll one day all arrive at a place--
let`s call it "dreamland" -- where various conversion apps all
output some kind of "Interchange XML" that already has existing
transformation support for a variety of output formats.
That is, an "Interchange XML" that WWP could generate and use in
place of its own "WWP XML" (or whatever) format. Or that the next
conversion app to move to an XML/XSLT output backend could use in
place of whatever "practically the same thing as what WWP-XML is
but functionally not compatible" format it will end up using.
Even if some other conversion application does get wise and moves to
the point that WWP has now reached, it seems like there is going
to be a lot of reinventing-the-wheel going on if the designers of
that application just create some new XML schema/DTD for it and
then (re)build their own XSLT conversion system around that.
How wonderful if there were already some kind of "Interchange XML"
format that had been around for years. Say, since 1992 or so. And
how wonderful if this very need had been one of the purposes for
which it was originally designed. And if there was already a very
sophisticated system for converting it to (X)HTML and PDF. And
HTML Help and Java Help. Also Eclipse Help. While we`re dreaming,
why not even imagine support for generating Unix man pages. Or
perhaps even Texinfo. Or TeX/LaTex...
And let`s say that, even though there were thousands of people who
actually chose to author their document _source_ in Interchange XML,
the beauty of it would be that you wouldn`t need to do that if you
didn`t want to. Because you could author your source in whatever
format you wanted -- for example, in some other XML vocabulary --
and then you could just transform it to "Interchange XML".
You know, if your were to author it in another XML vocabulary and
wanted to take advantage of all the existing Interchange XML
transformation support, it actually seems like all you would need
to do is have (or create) an XSLT stylesheet to do the conversion.
How grand that would all be...

Michael, are you referring to an existing proposal of some type, circa
1992, like the "Rainbow" DTD? Something like the following:
http://www.posc.org/ebiz/xml_edi/xmlArchitecture.html
http://xml.gov/efforts/pixit.htm
or perhaps an overlooked / underused standard that exists (even if
only in note or proposal form?)
Ryan
