XEP "Personal Edition" now free for "non-comm
RenderX has announced "a free, non-expiring, Personal Edition" of
their XSL-FO engine, XEP, for "non-commercial" uses.

http://renderx.com/news/index.html

I`ve not read the actual license, but in the announcement that was
sent out to a few XSL-related mailing lists, it says "users of XEP
Personal are able to distribute output documents given that nobody
gains any profit from this distribution." And the news item at
their site specifically mentions that it can be used for (among
other things) "open source documentation":

"The Personal Edition is licensed to individuals who wish to
produce PDF and Postscript for non-commercial applications. It
is perfect for creating W3C standards, other industry standards
and specifications, open source documentation, blog postings and
any other non-commercial application. The Personal Edition is
functionally equivalent to RenderX`s full software, with the
exception of a small stamp applied to pages at the very bottom
margin."

So if you`ve done work on documentation for an open-source
software project and been frustrated by the limitations in FOP or
other free-software XML-to-print/PDF tools, then (as long as you
don`t have an ideological opposition to using non-open-source
software -- XEP itself is a proprietary application, not
open-source), you might give XEP "Personal Edition" a try.

RenderX also runs an xep-support mailing list:

http://www.renderx.net/lists/xep-support/

And from what I have seen, along with being able to get
peer-to-peer help with XEP problems, if you post a question to
that list, you are likely (more often than not) to get a response
from one of the XEP developers, not just from other users.

P.S. For the record, I have no personal or financial stake in
RenderX, other than having actually purchased their product. (XEP
Desktop.)
