In the "Free Developer Tools Resource Library" section of our web site
linked below is a Python-based environment called "N2X" for converting from
SGML to XML.

I needed N2X because James Clark`s SX did not address preservation of
unparsed entity declarations and other internal declaration subset issues.

Our environment also includes an XML expression of SDATA entity replacements.

Though not directly to your question of going to MSWord, I hope this might
help in some other route to a solution.

Converting From SGML
Explain a bit more about what you want to do. Is this a one-time conversion,
or are you going to repeat this over and over? Converting SGML to Word turns
out to be relatively simple if your goal is to go from SGML to Word only and
not try to go back, especially if this is a one-time conversion.

Subject: [xml-doc] Converting From SGML

Hello. Have performed a search on converting SGML to other formats,
perferably MSWord, with little luck. If you have any information on
simple-to-use products/options, I would be very grateful.

Two posts that pertain to the search:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xml-doc/message/31
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xml-doc/message/32

however, I do not currently have FrameMaker, and wonder at its
functionality (on Windows).

Also, I have collected a list of products that *were* available for
converting from SGML, and provide that below for what its worth.

Thanks much in advance.
Servio

5. WordPerfect SGML Edition
- Use an outside package-for example, a Perl program or a
commercial
conversion program such as Avalanche`s FastTag.
- Converting from SGML to other file formats is straightforward in
WordPerfect SGML Edition. You simply perform a Save As operation and
specify the format that you want to use.

6. Near & Far Author
Perhaps one of the slickest products on the SGML Authoring list is
Microstar`s new Near & Far Author. This program operates
alongside
Microsoft Word. It customizes the Word interface to facilitate
structured authoring. What makes the program so slick is its
graphical mapping of document structure. It teaches authors
intuitively about structure better than any SGML seminar ever could.

Conversion to and from SGML
Conversion from SGML is pretty smooth, so long as the program can
locate all the entities and external files. Otherwise, the error
messages are collected in the Message History dialog box, which
explains why the file loading process failed (see Fig. 26.13).

Converting From SGML
Servio,
I suspect that there are no perfect solutions, especially for complex materials,
but a product you might want to look at is x4o©, a Word plug-in from i4i
(www.i4i.com). It`s a good company and the web site advertises it as "a
simple-to-use tool that enables your non-technical workforce to create XML
templates and associated DTDs, and valid XML documents based on these templates,
all while using a Microsoft Word interface." This all with the caveat that we
haven`t used this product ourselves.
A couple of items to note, based on the Web-site:
1. The product is advertised only as working with XML, you would need to check
if that`s an issue with your SGML (it`s usually a trivial step to make SGML
files XML-compliant. )
2. The Web site speaks only of creating XML documents in Word, not of importing
existing XML. I don`t know if that`s a restriction or just an advertising
choice, assuming their market are those who know Word and are now wanting to use
XML.
Our company, DCL, specializes in customized conversions to and from SGML, and we
do this kind of work you describe on a production basis for our customers. We`ve
found that, largely because of the variety of projects we work with, that we`ve
needed to build our own proprietary software, and that`s we use for our work.
I hope this helps.

Mark
