Problem in logging information..

Problem in logging information..
Though I used printk("<1>...") function, It does not print the message
in /var/log/messages or console..Anybody know what might be the
problem..Also I am newbie to linux device driver, have a confusion
whether we can use system call like sys_open etc. in the init_module
function.
