If anyone was worrying about this on my behalf, you can stop. It turns
out that one of my basic assumptions was in error

It turns out that it assumes the supplied ZIP file contains only file
names, not paths as well. Why the result of that should be an unhelpful
Java message is beyond me, but at least now I know what I need to fix.
