Concerning various initiatives to develop a common document
XML format, surely you are aware of at least some of them
listed at http://xml.coverpages.org/xmlFileFormats.html?

Personally, I am hopeful that the group based upon
OpenOffice.org/StarOffice XML technology has great success,
for they seem farthest along in this effort. Whether others
will adopt its work remains to be seen, however.
