Teaching Programming to 12 year old
I am a pediatrician (and VB hobbyist) and have a patient who has a
genetic disease that renders him weak and unable to breath. He is
wheelchair and ventilator bound, but can use a keyboard, mouse,
enjoys
using a computer, and is excellent at math. I would like to help him
learn to write computer programs and I am looking for suggestions
regarding:
1. Choice of language (VB, Basic, other?)
2. A book (or other tutorial) that would be understood and enjoyed
by a 12 year old boy.
3. Are there formal on-line courses ("distance learning") that might
work for him? At this point, I am thinking about teaching him
myself,
but may not be able to spend enough time with him.
Thank you,
Jim

As far as languages go, I would go with Visual Basic.NET. It is
easy to learn and powerful enough to write almost anything.

There are a few web sites that I would recomend.

http://www.vb-helper.com/ - There are lots of great tutorials and
sample code. Also, the guy that runs the site sends out an
excellent news letter each week.

http://www.learnvisualstudio.net/ - This site actually has videos
that teach you Visual Basic. It costs $59.95 to get access to
everything. But, you can sign up for a free subscription and get
two videos a week.

Hope this helps,

Mike
